Itinerary

  1. 1

    The Little Mermaid

Unveiled in 1913 and inspired by Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale, the small bronze statue on the rocks at Langelinie is one of the most famous sights in Denmark. We start with the story of Andersen and the brewer Carl Jacobsen, who gifted the statue to the city.

  2. 2

    Kastellet

One of the best-preserved star-shaped fortresses in Northern Europe, dating from the 17th century. Walk along the grassy ramparts, see the red barracks and the windmill, and hear how the citadel protected Copenhagen's harbour.

  3. 3

    Amalienborg Palace

Home of the Danish royal family. Four identical rococo palaces surround an octagonal square with the equestrian statue of King Frederik V. Learn about the Danish monarchy — one of the oldest in the world — and look out for the Royal Life Guards.

  4. 4

    The Marble Church

Frederik's Church, known as the Marble Church, has one of the largest church domes in Scandinavia. Begun in the 1740s and only completed in 1894, its story is one of grand ambitions and long pauses.

  5. 5

    Nyhavn

The postcard view of Copenhagen: 17th-century townhouses in bright colours along a canal filled with wooden ships. Once a busy sailors' harbour, and home to Hans Christian Andersen for many years.

  6. 6

    Kongens Nytorv

The King's New Square, Copenhagen's largest square, laid out in the 1670s. Surrounded by the Royal Danish Theatre, Charlottenborg Palace and the Hotel d'Angleterre, it's where our tour comes to an end.
